About Hotel St. George

Hotel St. George opened on 2 May 2018 at Yrjönkatu 13, in a historic building directly across from Old Church Park in the heart of Helsinki. The hotel is run by Kämp Collection Hotels — the same group behind Hotel Kämp — and was built around a different idea of luxury: art, holistic wellbeing and Nordic design rather than simple grandeur. Spread across seven floors and around 10,000 square metres, the hotel has 148 individually decorated rooms and five suites, and is a member of Design Hotels.

A building with a national history

The oldest parts of the building date back to the 1840s, but its most striking section — the palatial façade facing Yrjönkatu — was designed in 1890 by a 26-year-old architect named Onni Tarjanne, who would go on to design the Finnish National Theatre. Long before it became a hotel, the building housed the Finnish Literature Society, the printing house of Suometar, one of the first Finnish-language newspapers, and the Helsinki Finnish Club — all central to the 19th-century movement that helped shape an independent Finland. That history is woven into the interiors today rather than hidden behind them.

Arriving through the lobby

The hotel's entrance and lobby were rebuilt in close collaboration with the Helsinki City Museum, respecting the building's history while giving it a grand new arrival. Guests stepping in from Yrjönkatu are greeted by Tianwu, a large kite sculpture by the internationally renowned artist Ai Weiwei — one of many pieces from an art programme run with the Helsinki Art Museum and the National Gallery. It is an arrival that sets expectations for the rest of the stay.

The Wintergarden and dining

At the centre of the hotel is the Wintergarden, a glass-covered courtyard with a living-room feel, decorated with fairytale murals by Finnish artist Klaus Haapaniemi that nod to the same national-romantic period as the building's architecture. Restaurant Boon Nam, led by chef Tomi Björck, brings Thai flavours to the hotel's dining scene, while St. George Bakery & Bar serves fresh bread, salads and coffee through the day in a relaxed setting.

Spa and wellbeing

Guests aged 16 and over have access to St. George Care, the hotel's spa, which includes an indoor pool, sauna and gym, with treatments available to book. Wellbeing runs through the hotel's whole concept — rooms are designed as calm, restorative spaces, with Duxiana beds, marble bathrooms with rain showers, and amenities from the Swedish brand L:A Bruket.

Old Church Park and the surrounding streets

Hotel St. George faces Old Church Park (Vanha kirkkopuisto), one of central Helsinki's best-loved green spaces, laid out around the city's oldest surviving church. The Kamppi district around the hotel mixes quiet residential streets with some of Helsinki's best shopping and dining, and the hotel sits within easy walking distance of the Esplanade, Senate Square and the Design District.

Landmarks within walking distance

Helsinki Central Railway Station is about a seven-minute walk away, putting the whole rail network — including the airport line — on the hotel's doorstep. Helsinki Cathedral and Senate Square are around a kilometre away, and the Market Square and South Harbour about 750 metres, both an easy stroll. The Ateneum art museum, the Esplanade Park and the flagship stores of Finnish design are all within the same short radius.
