The building was renovated from top to bottom in a project of nearly ten months, reopening in autumn 2020 with redesigned rooms, a new lobby and a reworked restaurant floor. The result is a thoroughly modern 349-room hotel across nine floors — Nordic-modern interiors in dark tones with brass and gold accents — behind one of the best-connected facades in the city.

The Crowne Plaza anchors the eastern edge of Töölö, one of Helsinki's most handsome residential districts — blocks of 1920s and 1930s apartment houses in pale stucco, quiet streets, corner cafés and small shops, climbing gently from Mannerheimintie toward the sea on the district's far side. It is the Helsinki that Helsinkians actually live in, and staying here gives a visit a different texture from the shopping streets downtown.
Within a short walk are Töölö Square with its market and cafés, the indoor swimming hall that is an architectural monument in its own right, and Temppeliaukio — the astonishing Rock Church blasted into a granite outcrop, roofed with a copper dome, and one of the most visited sights in Finland, about a kilometre from the hotel.
Walk fifteen minutes northwest through the district and you reach Sibelius Park on the shore, where the steel-pipe Sibelius Monument stands over the bay — with the much-loved Café Regatta, a tiny red waterside cottage serving cinnamon buns to rowers and walkers, just along the water.
North of the hotel, past the Opera, rises the Helsinki Olympic Stadium — the functionalist landmark of the 1952 Games, comprehensively renovated and reopened in 2020, with its slender white tower offering one of the best views over the city. The stadium hosts international football, athletics and the big summer stadium concerts, and its museum wing tells the story of the Games that put post-war Finland on the world map.
Around it stretches Helsinki's sporting mile: the Töölö Sports Hall, the ice rink, the swimming stadium's outdoor pools in summer, and the running routes that link the whole complex to the Töölönlahti loop.
