Kuopio's market square (the kauppatori) is the heart of the city and one of the best-known market squares in Finland — the spot Savonians jokingly call the centre of the universe. From spring to autumn it fills with stalls selling fresh berries, vegetables, smoked fish from Kallavesi and local handicrafts, and it stays a meeting place year round. On its edge stands the Kuopio Market Hall, a handsome Art Nouveau building that has been trading since 1902, its wooden stalls stocked with Savo delicacies, breads, cheeses and pastries.
This is also the home of kalakukko, Kuopio's signature dish: a dense rye loaf baked slowly with fish and pork inside, traditionally carried by loggers and farmhands as a whole meal in bread form.
